Cass had searched the tide pools every morning that summer, but she had never found anything like the key. It lay at the bottom of the deepest pool, half-buried in sand — a key the colour of the sea itself, worn smooth as a pebble and glowing faintly green in the early light.
When she lifted it from the cold water, it was warm in her hand, as if it had been waiting a long time to be found.
